The scientific and technical cooperation between Ukraine and the Republic of Korea is regulated by the Intergovernmental Agreement on Scientific and Technical Cooperation, which was concluded on July 1, 1992 and came into force on May 20, 1994.
Cooperation on issues in the use of space for peaceful purposes regulated by Agreement between the State Space Agency of Ukraine and the Ministry of Science and ICT of the Republic of Korea, signed on December 7, 2011.
In recent time, a lot of efforts have been made in order to intensify scientific and technical cooperation between the two countries, a row of meetings of Joint Ukrainian-Korean Committee on Scientific and Technical Cooperation have been held. The last regular meeting of this Committee and the meeting of the Working Group on Space was held in Kyiv. As a result, a protocol was signed, indicating directions for further cooperation.
During the cooperation with the Korean side the financing of specific areas of joint research projects in Bio, Nano, Nano-material, ICT, Physics and Aerospace areas was agreed.
The Memorandums on cooperation in the field of distance education K-MOOC (Korea Massive Open Online Courses) among Ukrainian universities and a number of Korean research institutes were inked.
Cooperation between the institutes of National Academy of Science of Ukraine and the scientific institutions of the Republic of Korea are carried out within the framework of an interinstitutional agreements, joint participation in international scientific forums.
At this moment were defined the main directions of cooperation such as: electrical engineering and electronics, semiconductor technology, computer science, optics, sensors, applied physics, power engineering, applied chemistry, polymers, plastics and synthetic materials, biotechnology, radiation medicine.
The bilateral cooperation in the field of radiation medicine is in force. In particular, institutes of National Academy of Medical Sciences (NAMSU) together with the Korea Institute of Radiological and Medical Sciences (KIRAMS) elaborating a new technology for the protection of population from the consequences of nuclear disasters, prevention and treatment of diseases caused by radiation; development of techniques for the use of small doses of radiation for medical purposes. Also, the training of Korean specialists in the field of radiation protection was held on the basis of the institutes of the NAMSU.
In March 2018, the Memorandum of Understanding between National Technical University of Ukraine «Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute» and «Hanyang University» on the development of cooperation in the field of science and technology was signed.
On July 8-13, 2018, the Deputy Minister of Education and Science of Ukraine visit to the Republic of Korea was organized by the Embassy support. Ukrainian delegation visited the Ministry of Education of the Republic of Korea, Hanyang University and Korean Institute of Science and Technology (KIST). During this visit they discussed the current state of cooperation with Ukrainian Universities, the exchange of students for research, and the perspectives for consolidating the efforts of Ukrainian and Korean scientists in the priority areas of scientific research.
On February 26, 2019, with the assistance of the Embassy, a Memorandum of Understanding was signed between the Korean Institute of Science and Technology (KIST) and the Ministry of Education of Ukraine.
On May 21, 2019 Ambassador of Ukraine visited one of the biggest and most advanced scientific centers in the Republic of Korea – «KIST» - the Korea Institute of Science and Technology. KIST was established in 1966 to develop and promote Korean science and technology. The results have been remarkable advancement in Korea science and technology as well as exponent growth of the Korean economy. During the visit, Ambassador of Ukraine met with KIST president Dr. Byng Gwon Lee and with the group of Ukrainian students. Ambassador got acquainted with the scientific base, leading developments and achievements of KIST. Possible ways of cooperation were discussed following the provisions of 2019 MOU.
On January 20, 2020, Ambassador of Ukraine met with Mr. Chang Sang Cho, Vice-Chief of Secretariat of the Presidential Committee on Northern Economic Cooperation of the Republic of Korea. During the meeting, the ways of intensifying cooperation of Ukraine and the Republic of Korea in economic, scientific and humanitarian spheres were discussed. The Korean side was informed on Ukraine's investment attractiveness (the relevant materials can be found here https://ukraineinvest.com/). Agreements have been reached to maintain ongoing contacts with representatives of the Presidential Committee at the working level.
On March 6, 2020, Ambassador of Ukraine met with representatives of the South Korean company Hyundai Rotem. The possibility of enhancing cooperation between Hyundai Rotem and Ukrainian enterprises were discussed. During the meeting, Ambassador of Ukraine emphasized that the time has never been better to invest into Ukraine and to cooperate with the Ukrainian companies. Hyundai Rotem is a South Korean company manufacturing rolling stock, defense products and plant equipment. It is a part of the Hyundai Motor Group. Ukraine within the development of high-speed rail traffic on the eve of the Euro 2012 European Football Championship acquired ten Intercity+ class HRCS-2 electric trains manufactured by Hyundai Rotem.

On November 6, 2020, the Representative of the Embassy made a presentation of the scientific and technical potential of Ukraine at the meeting of the Innovation Council at the Korean Polytechnic University. Representatives of the Korea Technology and Information Promotion Agency for SMEs took part in the meeting. Ukraine's potential in the field of innovation, in particular in the aerospace industry and IT, was delivered to the Korean side. At the request of the Korean side, special attention was paid to the possibility of establishing cooperation with the E.O. Paton Electric Welding Institute of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine.
