On June 26 Ukraine celebrates the Day of the Crimean Tatars Flag.
The national flag of one of the indigenous peoples of Crimea was first approved in 1917 by the First Crimean Tatar Kurultai. After years of repressions during the Soviet era was again re-established on June 30th, 1991. Since 2010, June 26th has been marked as a day to celebrate the national flag of the Crimean Tatars.
The blue cloth and gold “tamga” (an ancestral sign) were not chosen by chance. The sky-blue color of the Turkic peoples symbolizes purity and freedom, honesty and loyalty, perfection and strength. The uniform color of the background is associated with striving for people’s unity, peace and prosperity.
In the russian-occupied Crimea, the flag is not banned officially. Through using their national symbols, the Kremlin-controlled government is trying to ensure loyalty of the Crimean Tatar population and thus prove to the world the propaganda myth of "equality" of peoples in Crimea. At the same time, the open use of the Crimean Tatar flag and other national symbols is being repressed.
As a sign of unity of Ukrainian and Crimean Tatar People, today the Crimean Tatar flag was raised at the Embassy of Ukraine in the Republic of Korea along with the State Flag of Ukraine.
Two flags - one state!
