Ambassador of Ukraine to the Republic of Korea Vasyl Marmazov participated in the Launch Event of the UNCITRAL Regional Centre for Asia and the Pacific (Incheon, Republic of Korea).
The Launch Event consisted of an opening ceremony followed by a regional workshop. At the opening ceremony, the relevant arrangements regarding the establishment of UNCITRAL Regional Centre for Asia and the Pacific, including the host country agreement, were formally signed. The objective of the regional workshop following the opening ceremony was to obtain the views and draw on the expertise of experts from governments, international organizations, the academia and the private sector on various topics in the regional context, in particular the role of UNCITRAL Regional Centre for Asia and the Pacific and the significance of UNCITRAL texts in the Asia-Pacific region.
The Event was attended by UN Under-Secretary-General for Legal Affairs Patricia O’Brien, Minister of Justice of the Republic of Korea Kwon Jae-Jin, UNCITRAL Secretary Renaud Sorieul and other high-ranking officials.
The main objectives of UNCITRAL Regional Centre for Asia and the Pacific will be to:
- enhance international trade and development in the Asia-Pacific region by promoting certainty in international commercial transactions through the dissemination of international trade norms and standards, in particular those elaborated by UNCITRAL;
- provide bilateral and multilateral technical assistance to States with respect to the adoption and uniform interpretation of UNCITRAL texts through workshops and seminars;
- engage in coordination activities with international and regional organizations active in trade law reform projects in the region;
- function as a channel of communication between States in the region and UNCITRAL.
