On June 28, Ukraine celebrates the Constitution Day. The Fundamental Law of Ukraine establishes legal foundations of the state, its sovereignty and territorial integrity, the basic rights and freedoms of Ukrainian citizens. The human being, their life and health, honor and dignity, inviolability, security are recognized the highest social value.
Ukrainian constitutionalism has been developing for centuries. Back in the 11th century, during the reign of Prince Yaroslav the Wise, the basis of "Ruska Pravda" was written. The document is believed to be Kyivan Rus’ first written code of customary laws.
The First Ukrainian Constitution was adopted in 1710 as «Treaties and Resolutions of the Rights and Freedoms of the Zaporizhian Host». It was written by the Cossack Hetman Pylyp Orlyk. The document represented essentially a contract between the Hetman and the Cossacks, defining the rights and duties of all.
Democratic processes in the Ukrainian People’s Republic (1917-1921) also produced a constitution. Adopted on 29 April 1918, it proclaimed Independence and territorial integrity of Ukraine, equality of citizens and democratic freedoms.
Adoption of the Constitution of Ukraine in 1996 represented one of the stages of the establishment of our statehood. In 2019, the Parliament of Ukraine amended the Constitution to enshrine in it the country’s aspiration towards EU and NATO membership.
Currently, while fighting back the russian full-scale invasion and witnessing the numerous crimes commited by occupants, we reassess the meaning of values enshrined in the Constitution of Ukraine. The Fundamental Law is the core of the consolidation of the Ukrainian people.
Congratulations on the Constitution Day of Ukraine! May peace and unity contribute to the further development of the rule of law in Ukraine!
