Ambassador of Ukraine Dmytro Ponomarenko, in an interview with Asia Business Daily, discussed the implications of russia’s war against Ukraine on the Korean Peninsula and called on South Korea to strengthen its support to Ukraine.
Key comments:
North Korean troops actively learn from the war in Ukraine, facilitating its military capabilities. This poses a direct security threat not only for Ukraine and other European countries, but to the Republic of Korea, Japan, the US, the Indo-Pacific region as a whole.
North Korean generals learn directly in combat realities how to plan military strategic operations in modern warfare. The combat tactics, drone warfare strategies and battlefield survival skills DPRK soldiers acquire in Ukraine will be taken back to North Korea and integrated into their military.
To stop russia’s aggressive plans and reckless actions is in the interest of all progressive democratic nations, including the South Korea.
On April 4, russia committed yet another attrocity by striking a residential neighborhood in Kryvyi Rih with a ballistic missile. The attack killed 20 people, including 9 children, and injured over 70 others.
We call on the Republic of Korea to publicly condemn russia’s war crimes and take concrete steps to increase pressure on moscow. This includes strengthening Ukraine’s air defense and providing additional military assistance to help protect civilian lives.
Ukraine’s joining NATO would make Russia turn to diplomacy. Failing that, we would need to maintain a formidable army and spend a large portion of state budget on fortifications and air defence.
moscow’s terror severely damaged Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, particularly thermal and hydroelectric power plants, as well as high-voltage networks. Restoring the energy grid quickly is now our highest priority.
Ukraine feels the desire and readiness of Korea to join the post war reconstruction of our country. Ukraine is grateful to the Republic of Korea for such support.
