Special Olympics World Winter Games 2013 were held from January 29 to February 5, 2013 in cities Pyeongchang and Gangneung. Delegation of Special Olympics Ukraine consisting of 10 delegates (6 athletes and 3 coaches) headed by Serhiy Komisarenko, President of Special Olympics Ukraine, academician of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, successfully participated at this games. This year Ukrainian team presented two Olympic sports – Alpine and Cross Country Skiing. The result of the Ukrainian team participation was winning of 6 gold, 3 silver and 2 bronze medals. Stepan Syniukov from Kyiv got the best results – he won 2 gold and 1 silver medals. In general, the World Winter Games in 2013 was attended by over 3200 participants from 111 countries.
Within staying in Korea, as the President of the Special Olympics Ukraine noted, Ukrainian team had also an opportunity to learn about the history, culture and nature of the country.
It is known, Special Olympics is the largest sports organization of people with intellectual disabilities in the world, which was founded in 1968 by the family of U.S. President John F. Kennedy. The organization cares about more than 3 million athletes from 175 countries. Special Olympics is recognized as non-governmental member of the UN. The International Olympic Committee officially gave the Organization the right to call its competitions as Olympic.
