Blue-yellow color combination is a deep historical tradition of our people. In its present form, the bicolor became the national flag of the Ukrainian People's Republic during 1917-1920. However, from the time the Bolsheviks seized power, the use of the flag was pursued and punished by laws of the totalitarian state. At the time of the Soviet Union's existence, the blue-yellow flag became a symbol of the national liberation movement.

On August 23, 1991, a group of parliamentarians brought the blue-yellow flag to the session hall of the Verkhovna Rada. In 2004, this day became the national holiday in Ukraine.
