Today, Ukrainians celebrate the National Flag Day, a symbol of Ukrainian statehood and identity.
The blue-yellow color combination has a deep historical tradition. During the last century it became the national flag of the Ukrainian People's Republic in 1917 - 1920, after which for decades of the existence of the Soviet regime it was banned by the laws of the totalitarian state and subjected to persecution with severe punishment. In the USSR, the blue and yellow flag was a symbol of the independence movement.
On August 23, 1991, a group of MPs brought a blue and yellow flag to the Session Hall of the Verkhovna Rada (the Ukrainian Parliament). In 2004, this day became a national holiday in Ukraine.
