Ambassador of Ukraine Dmytro Ponomarenko in the interview for Korea Economics Daily outlined the global security threat posed by Russia and highlighted opportunities for defense and reconstruction cooperation with South Korea.
Key comments:
«Appeasement» of Russia and other autocracies will never work. Should Putin be allowed to succeed, the Pandora’s box of reshaping borders or achieving strategic goals by use of force will be wide opened – right now this box is only ajar and we may still have time to close it with our joint efforts.
North Korea’s troops actively learned from this war, boosting Pyeongyang's military capabilities which is a serious threat. There’s a high possibility that North Korea-Russia relations will only be broadened. It cannot be ruled out that in exchange for the participation of North Korean troops in the Russia’s war against Ukraine, Russia could be directly involved on Pyongyang's side in case a hot phase of confrontation on the Korean Peninsula starts.
Given the world's recognition of the high quality of South Korean-made weapon systems, we would be glad to get some systems of that weaponry commissioned.
The Government of Ukraine is ready to provide the most lucrative conditions for reconstruction-related investment. We are convinced that South Korea will make a significant contribution for Ukraine, especially relying on the high level of expertise of Korean companies in the implementation of infrastructure projects and its own experience of post-war reconstruction.
The Ukrainian Defence Forces have unique experience in using drone systems, as well as countering their use by the enemy. We are open to discussing cooperation in this area with South Korean private and state-owned drone developers and manufacturers.
