The “Ukrainian Bookshelf” is now open at the oldest public library in Korea!
On June 16, as part of the project under the patronage of the First Lady of Ukraine Olena Zelenska we opened the third “Ukrainian Bookshelf” in the Republic of Korea.
This time, it was launched at the Namsan Public Library in Seoul. It is here within the walls of South Korea’s first public library, with a history spanning over 100 years, that the Ukrainian word has found another permanent home.
Namsan Public Library is a true cultural hub. Its collection holds over 500,000 publications, including rare early prints, and it welcomes more than 1,3 million visitors annually.
It is a great honor for us that among these invaluable shelves, there are now Ukrainian books that introduce our history, culture, and traditions to Korean readers.
“Books help cultures speak to one another,” stated Ambassador of Ukraine
Dmytro Ponomarenko during the opening ceremony.
We believe this initiative will serve as another bridge fostering deeper understanding and friendship between Ukraine and Korea.
We also remind you that “Ukrainian Bookshelves” have been earlier opened at the Seoul Metropolitan Library and the “Baedari” Library in Pyeongtaek. A selection of Ukrainian illustrated children’s books translated into Korean is also available at the National Library for Children and Young Adults of Korea.
