On December 2, in the Embassy together with Ukrainian artist Daria Alyoshkina we held a Vytynanka (cutout) workshop for the Ambassadors’ spouses in Seoul.
Ukrainians have decorated their houses with Vytynanka since 19th century. With special small knives, folk craftsmen cut weightless and fragile napkins, cloths, and towels. The Vytynanka ornament indicated with certain symbols what a family were celebrating, whether it was Christmas, a wedding, or a birth of a child. And Ms.
Alyoshkina has revived and popularised this art. Daria’s works are large and therefore are used to decorate interiors and public places.
We are grateful to our guests from Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia, Israel, Spain, Dominican Republic, Tanzania, Belgium, Peru, India, Ecuador for their interest and support of Ukrainian culture and art. We appreciate the opportunity to share techniques of creating the magical ornaments with you.
